NEMSAR was founded in 1988 and incorporated in 1990 by a small group of individuals who had been involved with various search and rescue operations as part of their volunteer positions with local fire departments, snow mobile, or ATV clubs and similar organizations. NEMSAR has since grown to a team of approximately 30 active and supporting members, dedicated to search and rescue under all types of conditions. Some team members are certified and trained in Search Management Procedures, Crew Leadership, Emergency Medical Treatment, Wilderness Navigation, Survival Techniques, Cave and High Angle Rescue. Other specialized areas of Search and Rescue include Incident Command, FEMA and SEMO courses, Man Tracking, and Map and Compass Skills. All active members have completed the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Wildlands Search course. The Team owns two trailored four-wheel drive ATV's, an RV setup as a communications / support unit with computers and printers, with New York State topographical maps capable of multiple radio frequency communications and an SUV support and transport search and rescue personnel and equipment such as snowshoes, crampons, rope rescue equipment.
