Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
I FISH NY is an outreach program designed to introduce New York State residents to their surroundings through fishing. On Long Island and in New York City, the NYSDEC partnered with New York Sea Grant to help implement the Program.
I FISH NY holds about 10-12 events per year which are held in both Nassau & Suffolk Counties in the spring, summer, and fall. The Program also offers free in-class programs which involve a classroom component followed by a fishing trip to a local water body. Both aspects of the program could not be run without the help from volunteers! I FISH NY volunteers help with various tasks such as:
Bait: Volunteers assist with the handling and distribution of fishing bait and baiting hooks for participants.
Loaner Rod & Rod Fixing: Volunteers assist staff in signing out fishing rods for participant use, as well as fixing rods upon return.
Children's Casting Contest: At some of our events, we offer a casting contest for kids age 14 and under. Volunteers assist in running the contest as well as helping beginner anglers in basic casting instruction, and the handout of goody bags and prizes to participants.
Setup/Breakdown: Volunteers help set up for the festival by hanging signs, preparing fishing rods, arranging tables, etc. At the conclusion of the event, volunteers lend a hand breaking down tables, taking down signs, etc.Casting Instruction: Volunteers teach participants basic casting instruction using a spin-casting and/or spinning rod outfit.
Education: If interested, volunteers assist staff during in-class programs and boat fishing trips. Volunteers also instruct participants during clinics and festivals in many fishing topics such as knot tying, fishing techniques, fish identification, and more!
