Mission Statement

The Victim Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office is committed to balancing the scales of justice by empowering victims of crime to exercise their rights. Our division strives to promote fairness, respect, and dignity for crime victims whil eadvocating for their constitutional rights. Through this process we strive to reduce the trauma associated with participation in the Criminal and Juvenile Justice System and provide victim assistance and victim compensation services in order to "make th evictim whole again." We value these ideals not only because victims deserve no less, but also because our community's sense of decencyh is enhanced when these rights and services are part of our justice system.

Description

Contact victim/witnesses of various crimes to:

Provide case and criminal justice system information throughout the course of prosecution. Check welfare of victims and make any necessary social service referrals. Provide emotional support and empathetic/active listening. Escort victims to court appearances as requested. Assist in arranging transportation for victims to court or interview upon request by the victim or the attorney. Schedule interviews upon the request of the attorney or advocate. Utilize available computer systems to research case status. Document all contact accurately in Victim Notification System.

In 2008, my husband and son were murdered. At that time it took me nine months to contact my advocate. When I did reach him, he told me he was quitting and that I would have to find a new advocate. He did send me some information, all of which I had received from the PPD. I have spent the last six years navigating the legal system on my own and trying to put my life back together. Without the help of any agency or advocate. Our case has finally been sent to the County Attorney's Office. Now I am navigating this office, on my own. I have learned a great deal in the last six years. At one time all I wanted was someone to show me how to be whole again. I learned this on my own. Now, I want to help others who are victims to violence learn to be whole again and to not feel alone.
