Mission Statement

The Centre's primary purpose for existence is to offer emergency shelter and related services to the homeless person in a compassionate Christian community, so that the person in need might be better able to make responsible choices and changes in their lives. The Centre has a particular ministry of caring for those who suffer from various physical and mental diabilities, unable to care for themselves, with few or no available alternatives. This includes 24-hour shelter care for those persons recovering from serious illness or injury.

Description

For 25 years, Austin Street Centre has been at the forefront of helping the homeless and poor of Dallas. Now, a nationally recognized therapeutic community, we provide emergency shelter, food, showers, medications, counseling, and job training programs free of charge to those who come here.

More than 400 men, women and children receive safe shelter here each night. More than 100 participate in our highly effective step-up programs, including substance abuse counseling, psychotherapies, and psycho-social counseling. These counseling services, all free of charge, are in partnership with UT Southwestern Medical School and SMU Graduate School of Psychology.

Our interdenominational chapel, located next door to our emergency shelter building, provides voluntary worship services three times each week, as well as Baptisms, weddings and funerals. Many of our clients seek this comfort of soul as well.

Our ministry is unique in that we are privately funded, accepting no government or United Way dollars from any level. Each of our programs and services is provided free of charge to our clients and at no cost to Dallas County taxpayers.
