Mission Statement

We believe all youth can succeed in life and relationships. Our equine

assisted therapy offers at-risk youth the opportunity to grow emotionally and

behaviorally while learning about the connections between themselves and

others.

Description

In the Fall of 2006 PBJ Connections was established to provide emotional healing for at-risk youth and their families using equine-based experiential learning and therapy. Equine Assisted Therapy is comparable in cost to traditional therapy but typically produces results more quickly. This year PBJ Connections delivered over 200 therapy sessions at reduced or no cost to children in need of our help.

PBJ Connections uses non-riding sessions to help youth build emotional awareness; relate feelings to behaviors; and improve their inner selves. Clinical therapy sessions help clients improve communication skills with peers and adults; learn emotional and behavioral management skills; improve coping and problem-solving skills; and increase their chances of becoming socially and emotionally competent adults. The facilitators are able to assist the clients in processing their behaviors and emotions in real time. This allows clients to work through behaviors and feel emotions as they would experience them in everyday life while in a safe environment. Clients are guided through connecting how they are relating to their world with how they are relating to the horses. Many of our clients have mental health diagnoses while others have behavioral issues. In all cases, the horses can help with healing.
