Mission Statement
Our mission is to feed the hungry in the spirit of compassion, understanding, and love.
Description
Martin’s, as it is affectionately known, is a free restaurant, serving lunch Monday through Saturday. We are an all-volunteer run organization since 1971. A core group of volunteers plan menus, stock our pantry, and coordinate volunteers . Each meal service at Martin’s is led by an experienced volunteer, and we welcome new volunteers on an ongoing basis. Along with serving healthy food, we strive to build a community between our volunteers and the guests we serve. We take pride and joy in the relationships that develop among people who share a common space and purpose at Martin’s.
Named after Martin de Porres, the patron saint of social justice, the sick, and the poor; we are committed to social justice and believe that feeding the hungry is a question of justice, not charity. Though our roots lie in the Catholic Worker Movement, we are a community with diverse spiritual practices and backgrounds. We consider each person who comes to Martin’s to be a beloved guest and treat them as such. We believe healthy food is a right, not a privilege. Martin’s operates on the principle that what must get done will get done, and we strive to develop a sense of personal responsibility towards that goal.
