Waukesha County operates a Teen Court- an alternate justice program for youth offenders based on the restorative justice model. In this court, teens who have committed offenses plead guilty, and then present their case to a jury of their peers. Other teens take on the role of prosecutor, defender, clerk of courts, jury foreman, and jury. The jury decides the consequences. We have been operating this program for over 10 years with a lot of success. The teens themselves are less likely to reoffend, they have a great opportunity for education, and they learn about the consequences of their actions. We are seeking teen volunteers to be part of our jury. Teens will listen to testimony and, along with the entire jury, help determine the consequence. All courts are held Thursdays evenings, typically the second and fourth of every month, or only the second Thursday of the month in June, July and August. Volunteer jurors are asked to commit to 1-2 shifts per month. This is a great way for teens to learn about the justice system, promote positive change in their community, and meet like-minded people. Waukesha County is building a team of volunteers to help assist with behind the scenes administration in times of emergency. Emergencies may include a missing child, natural disaster, or more. Volunteer responsibilities could include registration, interviewing, shift assignment, phone bank, and more. We'll train you for all of them! Volunteers will be working at our Volunteer Reception Center (VRC) which has a sole purpose to administratively organize spontaneous volunteers in emergencies. The VRC is activated as needed when a disaster arises. We'll contact you to ask for your assistance at the VRC. Shift lengths will vary depending on the disaster or emergency. The location of the VRC will also be dependent on these factors but will be in Waukesha County. All those interested should contact us for more information and to sign up for one of our trainings. All interested volunteers should register in advance.

Individuals are needed to assist with the Alcohol and Drug Recovery Group Facilitator Program, commonly referred to as our AODA Volunteers. The program works with clients who have alcohol, drug dependency and other addictions. AODA Volunteers are recovering people who regularly visit area facilities (Waukesha County Jail, Waukesha County Huber Facility, Waukesha County Mental Health Center, Waukesha County Health and Human Services, and more) and reach out to those who are new to recovery or seeking support. As a volunteer, you partner with another volunteer to share your experience, strength and hope with men and women who suffer from alcoholism and other drug addictions. Our program gets people back to work, strengthens families, reduces domestic violence and prevents dependency-related accidents and illness. Interested applicants must have personally experienced their own addiction and be active in their own recovery, and must have minimally one year of sobriety to be considered. Applicants must also be free of any pending or current court obligations. For more information please visit: http://www.aodavolunteers.com/

Youth in our juvenile justice system need role models. And not just any role model. They need people who have personally experienced the youth or adult criminal justice system, who have suffered consequences of negative decision making, and who are ready to share their story and help youth learn from it. These Youth Impact Speakers will share their personal story and experiences in hopes of helping youth currently involved in the system make different decisions and help steer them in a positive direction. We are seeking a quarterly speaking commitment- roughly four times in one year. Speaking days/ times are weekday evenings. Volunteers will be part of our Youth Mediation program, speaking to 8-10 youth who have committed crimes to persons or property. The group is geared towards restorative justice and understanding crime impact and consequence. Volunteer speakers should be prepared to answer questions from youth; have a passion for working with and supporting positive change in youth; have demonstrated maturity and dependability, and have the utmost comfort effectively working with diverse populations.
