Mission Statement

The National Capital Optimist Club (NCOC) is a civic organization with the purpose of serving youth in Washington, DC, and the DC metropolitan area. We accomplish our mission of "Bringing Out the Best in Kids" through club programs and financial support of local youth activities and charities.

Description

NCOC is one of 3100 clubs in the Optimist International (OI) organization. OI conducts three scholarship programs and NCOC may provide these at the local level:

  • Essay Contest
  • Oratorical Contest
  • Communications Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

OI conducts a famed junior golf tournament, the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at the PGA National Resort and Spain Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. NCOC has an annual junior golf tournament at Langston Legacy Golf Course in Washington, DC that feeds into qualifying tournaments for the international tournament.

The Optimist organization has other initiatives, one of which is Childhood Cancer. OI has pledged nearly $1 Million to fund a research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.

The major fund raiser of NCOC is operating two Christmas Tree lots, one in Chevy Chase and one in Kensington.
