The Virginia Choral Society

Statement of Purpose


Since it inception, The Virginia Choral Society's purpose has been to enhance the quality of life of our community by performing the finest choral music to inspire audiences of all ages. The Society's Program Committee diligently selects three distinct programs to challenge and accent the choir's talents as well as to entertain. The society strives to perpetuate the cause of good choral music and to raise community awareness of all facets of the performing arts.

The Virginia Choral Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and presentation of fine choral music in Hampton Roads. The Virginia Choral Society has enhanced the cultural life of the area since 1931.

The goal of the Virginia Choral Society is to:

    • foster a broader awareness of vocal music in the community;
    • cooperate with other groups in support of the arts;
    • continue our long tradition of presenting only the finest compositions from our rich choral heritage.

Description


T HE V IRGINIA C HORAL S OCIETY is a community-based choral group of over 130 voices which currently presents three major concert series each year; one in the fall, one during the winter holiday season, and one in the spring. Each series focuses on different choral works; the fall is Broadway/popular musical selections; the winter series is based largely on Christmas carols and other seasonal works, new and old; and the spring series presents choral works by the old masters, such as Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn and Mozart.

VCS is one of the oldest continuously performing choral organizations in Virginia having been organized in 1931. This concert year is our 78th. VCS is home-based in Newport News, Virginia and performs throughout the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
