Description

At the High School for Service & Learning, o ur students, educators, families, and community partners are dedicated to creating an active and nurturing environment, fostering academic excellence and growth through service.

HSSL was founded in September 2004 by the YMCA of Prospect Heights and former Principal Lauren Kruss as part of the New Century High Schools Initiative, a project designed to improve secondary education by opening small, personalized high schools in communities formerly served by large, performing high schools. Like HSSL, the New Century schools involve community and cultural partners to help improving the educational experiences of all students.

Our students, educators, families, and community partners are dedicated to establishing an active and nurturing environment that fosters academic excellence and growth through service. We are committed to empowering, respecting, and believing in ourselves, each other and our work together as conscious agents of change. Through high quality instruction and the development of civic, social, and technical skills, we will create a community of critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and productive global citizens.
