Mission Statement

The Federal Hill House Association's Foster Grandparent Program offers seniors, age sixty and older, opportunities to serve as mentors, tutors and caregivers for children in the Providence area with special needs. Our volunteers provide one-on-one much needed attention to at-risk children who might not otherwise receive the nurturing and guidance they need.

Description

The Foster Grandparents volunteer 20 hours per week in public and private primary schools, community centers, day care centers and head start programs. The Foster Grandparents read to the children, teach them their shapes and colors, help them with puzzles and participate with them in out-door play. The older children benefit from the seniors wisdom and experience. They help them with their homework assignments, arts and crafts projects and accompany them on educational field trips. At-risk children interacting with Foster Grandparent volunteers display an increased level of confidence and self-esteem. The intergenerational activities include encouragement, re-enforcement of classroom lessons, and sharing of knowledge and experience in a safe environment.
