Arts Based Elementary School

Description

Arts Based Elementary School is a charter school located in downtown Winston Salem, NC. As a charter school, we are a free and public school and receive state funding, but are not part of the WS/FC school system. We are run by our own Board of Directors and free to provide an innovative educational experience to our students based on our own specific charter. The curriculum at ABES adheres to the NC Standard Course of Study and we administer the same EOG testing required by the state. We offer an art-infused curriculum to our students that incorporates dance, music and visual arts into daily lessons and several class activities are led by resident artists. In addition, our students attend art, dance and music classes twice a week, as well as take part in drama, drumming and piano lessons. A tradition we are proud of at ABES is our Friday Sing activity, in which the entire school gathers in the auditorium at the end of the day each Friday and sings songs together. This activity is often attended by parents and helps foster a feeling of community in our school, which speaks volumes for a school that is attended by students from over 25 zip codes.
