Mission Statement

The award-winning EnvironMentors Project uses environmental science and mentoring to help young, urban adults prepare themselves for brighter futures. EnvironMentors helps them: 1) develop a greater interest in college; 2) enhance and reward their curiousity about environmental issues; 3) identify career opportunities, especially in environmental, conservation, and scientific fields; and 4) embrace a deeper commitment to the community.

Description

The EnvironMentors Project matches urban teenagers with environmental professionals. The pairs work together for eight months on environmentally oriented research, experimental, or community service projects. The mentoring is supplemented with special events and seminars and culminates in the EnvironMentors Fair and Awards Ceremony where participants are recognized for their work. The Project serves to open students' eyes to the contributions they can make to the environment and their communities and helps them develop the skills, knowledge, and discipline for greater success in life. Participants experience improved grades and attitudes, enhanced self-esteem, and confidence in their own abilities. Teachers, parents and mentors praise the program for the positive changes they have observed in student attitudes about themselves and their abilities.
