Mission Statement

Reading is Fundamental in Chicago develops a passion for reading for children living below the poverty level in Chicago who have limited exposure to books in their homes. If a child does not build a home library full of books he/she has chosen, they never develop a passion for reading. Reading is Fundamental in Chicago develops that passion for reading by bringing books (100's of titles) to children to choose from and keep. In addition, programs are presented in the classroom to build the excitement for reading and book ownership.

Description

Reading is Fundamental in Chicago was founded in 1972 and has impacted over 3 million Chicago children. It is the only Chicago Literacy Not For Profit which brings books of CHOICE to children. If a child chooses a book, they will read the book, and build on their desire to read for pleasure.

When a child reads for pleasure, that joy of reading carries into the classroom and improves their attendance, grades, testing results and high school graduation rates!
