Description

The Universal Kidney Foundation was founded in 2008 in response to the need for providing assistance to patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and kidney related illnesses in Flint, Michigan and greater Genesee County. The economic impact due to the loss of jobs in the area, resulting in loss of insurance coverage and benefits, and high costs of medical expense made it difficult for many patients to adequately access treatment and various related healthcare services. There was simply a lack of resources in the area to help bridge the gap in services. Many patients found themselves unable to get to/from dialysis, unable to afford necessary medication and equipment for health maintenance, and some even without the basic essentials such as food, shelter and utilities. UKF became a resource to many patients in these types of situations and through these services.
