Mission Statement

The mission of the South Dakota Literacy Council is to coordinate existing efforts to promote literacy in South Dakota and to advocate and support the continuance of literacy efforts across South Dakota.

Description

The South Dakota Literacy Council, Inc. was created in 1987 by Governor George Mickelson with the first state annual governor's conference on literacy. There are currently 21 local council affiliates working with the state literacy council in order to create learning opportunities for new readers and their families and other potential students across the state of South Dakota. A VISTA Family Literacy Project at 10 sites will further develop family literacy programs in South Dakota.
