Mission Statement

The Shanti Uganda Society improves infant and maternal health, provides safe women-centered care and supports the well-being of birthing mothers and women living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda.

Description

Shanti Uganda provides programming in three key areas: maternal and child health, teen girl workshops, and the women's income generation group for women living with HIV.

We provide holistic mother-centered care throughout prenatal, delivery and postpartum. Roughly 200 mothers deliver their babies at the Shanti Uganda birth centre each year.

We also offer teen girl empowerment workshops in an effort to reduce maternal mortality associated with teen pregnancy. Through our workshops teen girls learn about hygiene and nutririon, reproductive health and family planning, female mentors, and healthy relationships.

The Shanti Uganda’s Women’s Income Generating Group (WIGG) currently employs 18 HIV positive mothers and grandmothers. The program has allowed the women to upgrade the hygiene and sanitation of their homes, put their children into school, afford nutritious foods and adequate health care, and learn business skills.
