Mission Statement
Southern Shakespeare Company, making Shakespeare accessible and fun, cultivates an appreciation of the arts through educational programs, training, and an annual free Shakespeare in the park Festival.
Description
In 1995 Southern Shakespeare Festival began as a touring company which toured local theaters, high schools, and community art centers. After Southern Shakespeare Festival’s first year, in conjunction with FSU’s School of Theater Dean, Richard Fallon, SSF established a home at Kleman Plaza in Tallahassee, Florida with a free Shakespeare festival in the park. Productions have included A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, As You Like It, Merry Wives of Windsor and The Tempest.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Laura Johnson, Artistic Director Lanny Thomas, and Education Director Dr. Kevin Carr, Southern Shakespeare Festival brings bold and exciting Shakespeare productions to its new home at the Capital City Amphitheater in Cascades Park, inviting thousands of folks, from all around the region, to enjoy free Shakespeare in the park.
