Under the Non-Profit organization Educational Justice, EJ Activists is an initiative to close the educational opportunity gap between students of low socioeconomic status and their more privileged peers.

We tackle the educational inequity ravaging our communities by tapping into an existing resource: we organize and direct the efforts of exceptional high school students, allowing them to pass on their knowledge and skills by tutoring younger peers preparing to enter high school.

The Educational Justice Activists program invites high school juniors and seniors to apply to serve as tutors for low-income middle school students. Applicants are selected based on academic credentials and, if accepted, become activists for educational equity. These students, called EJ Activists, then create a profile via the EJ web application that includes a photo, background, interests, and regular tutoring availability. Supervisors in local middle schools and community centers identify low-income students in grades 5-8 needing academic support. These students are called EJ Achievers. Each EJ Achiever enrolled is able to browse through the database of Activist profiles to select one to be his/her dedicated tutor for hour-long sessions every week for up to four years.
