The mission of Zenon Dance Company and School, Inc. is to sustain an artistically excellent, professional dance company in the Twin Cities by presenting the commissioned works of emerging and locally, nationally, and internationally recognized modern and jazz choreographers to the broadest and most diverse audiences and communities possible, including those with disabilities. Zenon accomplishes this through performance, education, and outreach. Zenon's school provides high quality dance instruction for avocational to professional dancers in a diverse curriculum.
Company Performances For the past 27 years, Zenon Dance Company has commissioned and performed the works of emerging choreographers, as well as nationally and internationally renowned masters. It is one of the few companies in the United States to perform both modern and jazz dance. Zenon has toured extensively, including two tours to Micronesia and performances in Russia, Aruba, Switzerland, New York, Colorado and California. As a repertory company, Zenon's eclectic artistry allows the Company to reach audiences from a broad demographic range. To date, Zenon has served over 300,000 people through performing, teaching, and outreach activities. Outreach Education Since its inception, Zenon has been committed to making dance accessible to diverse populations of children and young adults, working frequently with deaf/hard of hearing and students with severe behavioral and emotional problems. In the past five years alone the professional company has conducted over 50 residencies in a variety of settings, including public and private schools, open and magnet schools, and neighborhood and community centers. Approximately 1,250 youth and adults were reached through Zenon's local and internationally toured educational outreach programming during the 2007-08 season, 70% of whom are students of color, and a large percentage from socio-economically disadvantaged populations. Zenon Dance School Zenon Dance School is an eclectic venue for learning ballet, tap, breakdance, hip-hop, yoga, African, and other styles that reflect the trend in merging genres. The school offers four sessions of classes per year with 45-50 classes offered per session, to an annual average of 2,500 recreational, pre-professional, and professional dancers. The school's faculty consists of approximately 40-50 of the area's leading teachers, dancers, and choreographers, including Zenon company members. For the past 18 years, Zenon's Scholarship Program has provided subsidized classes and performance opportunities to over 130 students each session. This scholarship program is unique in the Twin Cities, serving as a springboard to professional careers for dancers, teachers and choreographers alike and fulfills an important need in the dance community. An average of 10 aspiring local choreographers each year develop works on Zenon's Scholarship students.
