The mission of Brighter Beginnings is to support healthy births and children's successful development by partnering with parents, strengthening families, and helping to build strong communities.
Serving East Bay communities for twenty-seven years, Brighter Beginnings offers programs for families and children targeting needs that range from improving health outcomes of babies, teen pregnancy, sexual and reproductive health, child development, parenting skills, financial education, and mental health. Over the years, the agency has evolved from its initial offering addressing teen pregnancy and black infant health to programs and services that address the needs of the entire family. Each year Brighter Beginnings serves over 2,200 low-income families in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties with centers in Oakland, Antioch, and Richmond. The purpose of Brighter Beginnings is therefore to discover and define each family's challenges through a supportive in-home family case management approach where we identify the resources and programs that will help develop skills to put families on the road to self-sufficiency in positive ways for their young children. Our values include the following:
- Nurture beginnings for healthy futures
- Teach skills for supporting healthy births
- Respect the uniqueness of family systems and cultures
- Build on family strengths
- Support the entire family system
- Engage communities in supporting family needs
- Help families clarify goals
- Educate parents to understand their children's development
- Develop skills for self-sufficiency
Volunteer Program Purpose:
Because the efforts of volunteers are seen as a valuable human resource that directly contribute to the achievement of our mission, the purpose of the Brighter Beginnings Volunteer Program is to coordinate a variety of project-based activities that directly contribute to the services and programs that we offer to low-income families in both Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
