Arlington Historical Society is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to preserving the history of Arlington County, VA (ArlingtonHistoricalSociety.org). We maintain a 6000+ artifact collection, the Arlington Historical Museum, and the oldest house in Arlington County, the Ball-Sellers House. We are looking for a new Collections Manager to replace our current Collections Manager who is moving in October. In the past few years, we have made significant improvement in the organization and documentation of our collection, and we’re looking for a motivated volunteer to build on this progress. Work takes place at the museum and at our off-site storage facility in Crystal City (Metro accessible). This is a great opportunity for someone retired from archiving, registration, collections management, or related museum fields who wants to continue to contribute to the field. On a daily basis you will: Work with volunteers to catalog, rehouse, and preserve artifacts in the collection Oversee volunteers working on special projects such as deaccessions, archeology cataloging, and care of special collections Provide updates and education to the Board of Directors Manage acquisitions and accessions Support recruitment of volunteers and interns Commit to 10 or more hours per week of on-site work in support of these efforts Desired experience: Knowledge of professional museum practices and standards, including registration methods, object loans, safe object handling, preservation, packing and shipping, proper storage, security measures, and artifact marking/labeling techniques Familiarity with collections management databases (we use PastPerfect), MS Office suite, and Adobe Acrobat Ability to support strategic collections management plans and acquisition policies that represent all of Arlington’s residents, past and present Willingness to implement and adhere to Collections Management Policy Ability to lead and train volunteers and interns of diverse backgrounds and skillsets Familiarity with museum display, such as mount making, and exhibition techniques and standards Ability to set and meet deadlines, manage projects, and self-motivate Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow volunteers and the general public

Museum Docent: Weekends 1-4, Training provided. Ball-Sellers House Docent: Saturdays 1-4, April-October, Training provided. Social media manager: Your location, your hours. Volunteer Coordinator: Track volunteer interests and connect new volunteers with appropriate opportunities. Your location, your hours. Website manager/developer: Your location, your hours. Collections Volunteer: Work with artifacts behind the scenes. Research, catalog, archival housing of artifacts important to Arlington History. 3 hour/week for 3 months minimum commitment. Training provided. Weekdays between 9-3, on-site at museum. Facilities Manager: Should be skilled with routine building maintenance tasks and comfortable interacting with contractors. Flexible hours.
