Mission Statement

The Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties is an educational and non-profit volunteer organization. The members will provide individualized basic reading, writing and math instruction to enable adults the opportunity to acquire the necessary basic skills so they may participate fully in their society. This will be accomplished with: LOVE for our fellowman; and in a CARING manner that respects and promotes the dignity of each person; it is BEST accomplished with a SPIRIT OF TEAM involving tutors, volunteers and our community at large that affirm the value of each person's gifts and talents shared in a SPIRIT OF COOPERATION; We MUST commit and protect the RIGHTS OF EACH PERSON and to accept personal responsibility for fulfilling one's duty as promised; and show CONCERN for appropriate and responsible utilization of resources for this organization and sensitivity to the needs of this community. Description

The Literacy Council of Bowie & Miller Counties provides basic & intermediate and family literacy for adults, youth & children. Community Learning Centers with small paid staff and volunteers provide one-on-one, small group and computer assisted instruction in the Arkansas counties of Lafayette, Little River and Miller and in the Texas Counties of Bowie & Cass. The Council trains volunteer tutors for the community, corrections and teens. Screening for learning disabilities is conducted at all sites. The Council is affliated nationally with Laubach Literacy Action and Literacy Volunteers of America. With a budget of less than $200,00 in 1998-99, the Council served over 1,100 adults and 400 children with quality educational services.
