Mission Statement

Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance’s mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering of homeless pets by providing shelter and veterinary care, and to ultimately secure permanent, loving homes for animals in need. As managers of the Allegan County Animal Shelter, we carry out this mission everyday!

Wishbone Pet Rescue started out as a typical pet rescue, but within our first year, we realized as the largest county in Michigan we were also one the poorest funded animal control facilities in the state. From this realization came our refocused community based philosophy to help animals and pet families in need. In 2011 we opened the Wishbone Thrift Store, cat adoption center and administrative offices in Douglas. For cat adoptions in the store, we maintain several cage free cat rooms that allow adopters to spend endless time with their perspective pet. Once a month on the 2 nd Saturday of Month, from March to December the Wishbone House offers Spay and Neuter clinics through Spay Neuter Express, a mobile surgical unit. These are low cost spay and neuter clinics for the public. Through a grant for our Sylvia’s Place program, we care and shelter animals for women involved in domestic violence, for the term of their stay at the safe house. To reach the next generation of pet owners, we also offer an education program at schools to educate youth on humane animal welfare. Beginning March 2011, the job of caring for all that arrives at Allegan County Animal Shelter, falls to Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance. Now in the second 3-year renewal of our contract, Wishbone has hit our stride with improved adoptions and transfers of adoptable animals. We treat all the animals in our care with respect and love, knowing that it could be our own.
