Mission Statement

The Independence Adult Education and Literacy Program will identify and empower those persons 16 years of age or older who desire the basic skills necessary to function as productive and responsible citizens. We believe that all who are willing can learn. And so, the program is directed toward improving reading, writing, speaking and numerical skills to a secondary school equivalency.

It is the deep seated goal of Independence Adult Education and Literacy Program to interrupt the cycles of poverty and ignorance and to cultivate student self-esteem, self-motivation, and personal fulfillment

Description

Independence Adult Education works with adults (aged 17 and above) who need basic education to enter secondary training, to acquire a GED, or to function in a job. We also work with those who want to learn to speak English. Our Literacy Program is designed to meet the needs of Adults who read, write, or compute below a 6th grade level. Volunteers are trained to work with students on a one to one basis in reading, writing or math. No special abilities are required.
