Mission Statement

Our mission is "to create and preserve an open and sustainable island community that supports and enhances the educational opportunities of youth from Maine and beyond." We are "Offshore, Off-line, and Off-the Grid." Aware of the challenges of providing engaging science instruction within the strictures and confines of the school day, Hurricane is addressing the critical national need for greater science literacy, while incorporating sustainable technologies both for teaching purposes and out of necessity at our offshore, off-line, off-the-grid campus. Our students work shoulder to shoulder with scientists researching such issues as climate change, ocean health, and sustainability. Leadership is taught and practiced with an emphasis on becoming passionate, effective advocates and stewards of the environment.

Description

As our world faces serious environmental challenges that threaten our oceans and climate, America is confronted with a decline in science participation and literacy. On Hurricane Island, the epicenter of the Gulf of Maine’s rapidly changing marine ecosystem, we have a great opportunity and responsibility to capitalize on our position. We created the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership with the goal to be the best experiential STEM program anywhere that will train, excite, and inspire participants of all ages to be informed and impassioned change leaders.
