Mission Statement

The Cooper Square Committee (CSC) works with area residents to contribute to the preservation and development of affordable, environmentally healthy housing and community/cultural spaces so that the Cooper Square area remains racially, economically, and culturally diverse. We have spearheaded significant neighborhood victories in our history, comprising over 50 years of tenant organizing, community-based planning, advocacy and development. We rely on the active involvement of our members in the organization’s work to advance our affordable housing agenda.

Description

The Cooper Square Committee: In 1959 community residents mobilized to save their diverse, working class Lower East Side neighborhood from being bulldozed by the powerful planner Robert Moses. Ever since, Cooper Square’s mission has been to organize community residents to preserve and expand affordable, environmentally healthy housing and community/cultural spaces so that the Cooper Square area remains racially, economically and culturally diverse. Today Cooper Square, which has 600 paid members, organizes tenant associations, promotes demonstrations and press conferences to expose predatory speculators, conducts leadership training workshops for tenant leaders and provides housing and social service counseling for individual community members.
