Mission Statement

The Wellston Loop Community Development Corporation (WLCDC) exists to develop re-vitalize the Wellston Loop Commercial District and the surrounding area. We believe that existing businesses, property owners, and residents should
lead the economic development of the area. We will accomplish our goals by organizing existing stakeholders in the surrounding area to assess needs and assets, develop programs and attract resources to create a healthier and vibrant community. We will work to improve city services and the infrastructure of the area, assist with small business development, building renovation, new construction,
beautification, job training, and education. We will encourage collaboration and cooperation among private and public entities.

In the 1940's, 50's, and 60's this area, then known as the Wellston Loop Shopping Area, was the 3rd largest business district in the country. The boundary of this thriving district extended from Hamilton on the east to just inside the City of Wellston on the west. This area was home to many thriving businesses. There was the Katz Drugstore at the Bus Loop on Hodiamont. Across the street was Kresges Department Store. The south side of the district housed stores like the Tom McCann Shoe Store, National Shirt Shops, Rothman Furniture Compnay, and J.C. Penneys, to name a few. The Mikado Theater located on the 5900 block of MLK Blvd. attracted many movie goers to the district.

Despite the decline and abandonment of the area, some businesses and residents have remained. Believing this area will evole into a thriving area once again the WLCDC was organized in 2001. This new district will provide not only goods and services, but also jobs, education, and social services.

We believe an important component of development hinges on the cooperation between the City of St. Louis, the City of Wellston, and St. Louis County working in collaboration with local stakeholders.
