Mission Statement

Gitana Productions is an arts and education organization that provides global healing through music, dance and drama by engaging in cross-cultural collaboration with diverse ethnic communities.

Description

Gitana conducts three distinct programs which include the following:

1. "Faces of Love" performances which feature the music, dance and drama of different cultures around the world. These performances are preceded by educational events which engage diverse citizens in cross-cultural experiences. (Ex. Dr. Ian Hancock, an expert on romani culture gave a lecture on the history and culture of gypsies to an audience of African Americans, Jews, Hispanics and educators working with romani children in the Public School System. Roma attended this gathering and brought authentic romani food. On another occasion Chinese Americans, African and White Americans were brought together to share personal stories and histories and to share in the eating of classic dishes from both cultures.)

2. Gitana initiated, "Global Education through the Arts," for immigrant youth and African American youth in south St. Louis. The program teaches dance, drama and music as well as intercultural communication and leadership skills. The youth range from 12-18 years of age and have the opportunity to perform with professionals at the end of the year. Curriculum includes conflict resolution, cultural diversity training, becoming successful in a competitive environment and interpersonal skills.

3. In 1997 Gitana saw the need to highlight and celebrate the contribution of volunteers who contribute to a more tolerant and accepting St. Louis. We began an annual campaign, "Extraordinary/Ordinary Person of the Year: Deeds Beyond Race." This campaign asks the public to nominate people in their community who have made significant contributions to others without regard to race, religion and color. The winner of this campaign is honored at our "Faces of Love" performance and widely covered by the press as a model to others
