North Country Children's Clinic was founded in 1971 and is the only private, not-for-profit, multi-service agency of its kind in northern New York. No other agency impacts the health and wellness of more children. The agency has grown over 36 years in response to community needs to include a four-county service area roughly the size of the state of Connecticut, 134 employees, including six vital programs: pediatric medical care, primary dental services, mental health counseling, special supplemental food program for Women, Infants, & Children (WIC), adolescent pregnancy program and facilitated enrollment (assistance with enrollment in Medicaid and Child/Family Health Plus). Doctors, nurse practitioners, dentists, dental hygienists, and mental health counselors in the Children's Clinic programs provide primary care and preventative health care services whose result is to keep children healthy and out of expensive emergency rooms and costly hospital beds. We estimate that our programs are saving thousands of dollars, not only in state and local Medicaid and Child Health Plus expenses, but also for our local citizens who would pay higher taxes to help cover ER and inpatient hospital health care costs for thousands of uninsured children and families living in rural areas.
