SNAPSHOT: Bethel Hobbs Community Farm
What: A 501c (3) designated not-for-profit organization that is fully volunteer based and specializes in the growing and harvesting of fresh and organic produce. We, also, provide opportunities for community involvement and education.
Where: 178 Oxhead Road, Centereach, New York 11720. The farm is 11 acres and 7 acres is currently allocated for gardening and farming. The remaining 4 acres are intended for non farming initiatives that promote learning.
When: Operated annually from April through October. Normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 AM - 4:00 PM and Saturday from 10 AM - 2 PM, weather permitting. ORGANIZATION PROFILE:
History - Hobbs Community Farm is the last surviving African American family farm on Long Island. Mr. Hobbs took ownership of the land in 1955 from his family which had farmed the land for a number of years prior to that time. When Alfred Hobbs died in 1996, he left the farm to Bethel Setauket AME Church. Due to legal complications, the farm became overgrown and vandalized. The church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, the "Friends of Hobbs Farm" was formed leading to the start of the restoration process of the farm in 2007.
