Mission Statement

The mission of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is to bring high-quality symphonic

music to the community, enriching us all in the process.

Description

The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra (formerly called the Seacoast Community Chamber Orchestra) held its first rehearsal on October 6, 1997. The membership consists of approximately fifty musicians from the Seacoast area of Maine and New Hampshire, the majority of whom are not professional players. We are an all-volunteer 501 (C) (3) tax-exempt organization with an executive board which organizes concerts, fundraising, and other events.

The PSO brings a symphony experience to the heart of the Seacoast through its concerts and outreach programs. Many Seacoast residents would like to see a professional orchestra on a regular basis but the time and money needed to travel to Portland or Boston can prevent many from realizing this desire. The PSO provides local, affordable concerts and a high degree of musicianship for the enjoyment of Seacoast residents and visitors alike.

Because most local schools do not have a string orchestra program, PSO provides a valuable group performance opportunity for advanced string students in middle or high school. Being part of an orchestra encourages young musicians to develop their talents and to experience teamwork, self-discipline, and individual expression. The PSO orchestra gives amateur members, both young and old, an opportunity to play the great symphonic works, from the Baroque to the contemporary, alongside professionals and semi-professionals, all under the baton of a highly talented conductor.

We typically perform three concerts per year including fall and winter "classical" concerts and a family pops concert in late spring/early summer. With education as a high priority, there is always a chance to meet the musicians and try out an instrument or two. We offer student discounts to area public, private, and music schools.
