Mission Statement

TSA's Canine Breeding and Development program selectively breeds, raises, and prepares puppies to be future explosives-detection dogs within the National Explosives Detection Canine Team Program. Dogs who graduate from training are assigned to airports and mass transit systems nationwide. The program is located at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Description

The TSA's Canine Breeding and Development Program uses volunteers in the San Antonio and Austin, Texas communities to raise puppies. Volunteers care for these puppies in their homes from ten weeks to twelve months of age. The program supplies all needed supplies, food, and veterinary care needed to raise the puppy. The primary need is for volunteers to socialize puppies and to condition them to the types of environments the dogs will be working in as adults.

We're dog-lovers so this was a natural fit with our family. We just finished 9 months with our first (but not last!) TSA puppy, Ddean. It was SO very rewarding! It's hard to call it "work" when your heart is so wrapped up in it and your "project" smothers you with wet, slobbery kisses every morning at 5am. My two sons and I enjoy the idea of serving our country by opening our home to these very special puppies and will do it again in a heartbeat!

Our family is fostering a TSA puppy. We find great pleasure in doing so. The staff at the CBDC help make it so easy. What a small sacrifice we can make for our country, especially compared to others that have lost their lives. There is also a great opportunity to volunteer at the puppy center. You can walk, bathe and play with the dogs. Our daughter spends a great amount of her free time helping out. It is a wonderful program to be involved with!!!
