Mission Statement

Our Mission Statement:Safe Harbor provides before and after school programming and is dedicated to promoting and encouraging all aspects of student development. Our tools are motivation, understanding and creativity, which we believe are essential. With great community cooperation and support we provide a safe and fun learning environment for Michigan City students and their families. Safe Harbor follows the school calendar and is available before school at Edgewood, Knapp and Joy Elementary Schools, from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and after school at Knapp, Edgewood, Joy, Lake Hills, Marsh, and Springfield Elementary Schools until 6:00 p.m. each day. Students are not required to attend daily or to stay until 6:00 p.m. Safe Harbor is also offered for preschoolers at Lake Hills and Pine Elementary Schools for the morning and afternoon sessions. Safe Harbor partners with Project Learn to offer after school programming at Niemann and Pine Elementary Schools every day until 6:00 pm. Call your child's school or the Boys and Girls Club at (219) 873-2298 for more information. Safe Harbor also offers after-school programs from 2:15 - 5:30pm at Barker, Elston, and Krueger Middle Schools (M,T,W) and at Michigan City High School (M-R). Safe Harbor offers a variety of activities to students K-5 in the Michigan City area. In addition to offering homework support and recreational activities such as basketball, track, and kickball, Safe Harbor provides students with the opportunity to participate in community service activities and enrichment classes. Past enrichment opportunities have included: Spanish, sign language, flag team, music, art with Lubeznik Art Center, cooking, crafts, creative writing, and educational field trips. Safe Harbor is the result of a partnership between Michigan City Area Schools, the American Red Cross, Hours for Ours, Dunebrook Nurturing Parents, the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, Singing Sands Performing Arts, Boy Scouts of America, Purdue University North Central, Valparaiso University, the Michigan City Public Library, Michigan City Parks and Recreation, Leadership LaPorte County, and the Michigan City Boys and Girls Club.
