Mission Statement
The WESW is a space where students can use their hands, minds, and imaginations to become stewards of their own educations.
Description
The Watsonville Environmental Science Workshop (WESW) was established in 1997 as part of the California Community Science Workshop expansion made possible through a grant from the National Science Foundation. The WESW is modeled directly from the San Francisco Science Workshop and has since inspired similar workshops in Fresno and Greenfield. Therefore, the WESW is part of an alliance of workshops providing equitable access to science and hands-on learning.
Curt Gabrielson was the founder. He approached the City Council with his plan and opened the workshop doors at Marinovich Park. Curt Gabrielson has published several books of projects that have been designed and used at the Science Workshop; Kinetic Contraptions , Tinkering , and Stomp Rockets .
