Mission Statement

The Watsonville Environmental Science Workshop has teamed up with The Wahine Project to offer a unique educational experience to local teenage and pre-teen girls in our area. We are enabling the girls to work together in designing and constructing a surfboard from scratch. We are starting with a polyurethane blank and we intend to shape, fiberglass, polish, and surf our board as a group. The girls are using this surfboard project to learn about; math, hydrodynamics, ocean sciences, engineering and art to name just a few. Our program needs additional supportso that it can reach a wider audience and have a more permanent impact. Currently the lead instructor is a part time employee and the materials that are being used are all salvaged or donated. A grant would easily allow us to expand so that we could reach a wider audience. It is trying for all those involved that we have such a dynamic and needed program but that we do not have the capacity to reach more than five girls at a time.
