Mission Statement

It is the mission of Special Collections to provide information about our region to serve the education and research needs of the students, faculty, and staff of PSU, while at the same time making this information available to the public either in person or via the Internet. This information takes many forms and includes all subjects as they relate to the Lake Champlain Valley (including Vermont and the Province of Quebec), the Adirondack Mountains, and northern New York State. Special Collections also actively supports the economic development of the region through its efforts develop heritage tourism.

Description

Open to the public without fee, Special Collections contains general materials on New York State with particular emphasis on the Northern Counties of Clinton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence, Hamilton, Herkimer, and Warren. Information is contained in a variety of formats:monographs, periodicals, pamphlets and other ephemera, photographs, maps, and manuscripts. Special Collections' cardcatalogs also include indexing of local newspapers and article-by-article indexing of periodicals relating to New York State. In addition to New York and Local History materials, Special Collections contains the College Archives, the thesis collection,rare books, and the Rockwell Kent Collection. Services provided in Special Collections include user assistance (available during all hours that the collection is open), referralto other historical collections as needed, and individual and group orientation to the collection.
