Mission Statement

Creating art that is relevant and accessible to diverse audiences. We build cross cultural, cross generational bridges through the performing arts, and shatter the stereotypes of aging.

Description

Grown Women Dance Collective was founded in 2006 by retired professional dancers. All dancers are in their 40's & 50's and are former members of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem. Martha Graham Ensemble, Bill T. Jones, Dayton Contemporary, Cleo Parker Robinson, and over 45 Broadway shows.

We present an annual "Fallen Heroes, Rising Stars: A Juneteenth Celebration Through Dance" where we honor 45 musical artists: James Brown, Etta James, Lena Horne, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, etc... through dance, music and multimedia. We sponsor low income chidlren to see the show, they take a free dance class, and receive African American historical biographies. We also offer free community classes of Pilates for Back Pain & Fall Prevention for Seniors in association with the yearly concert.

The project is a performing arts powerhouse that uses concert dance to tell U.S. history and uplift communities.
