The Tennessee SHIP Program offers free and objective counseling about Medicare insurance to all Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. SMP offers assistance in educating beneficiaries on identifying and preventing Medicare and Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse. Both programs work hand in hand to assist all Tennesseans with their questions and concerns about Medicare issues. Working through federally funded grants from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Administration on Aging, SHIP and SMP is administered throughout the nine Area Agencies on Aging and Disability.
Tennessee SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) is a program funded by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is administered by the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability. The program has blossomed into a well-recognized service that is free, confidential and non-biased. SHIP does not sell insurance or endorse any company that sells Medicare products.
SMP: Empowering Seniors to Prevent Medicare & Medicaid Fraud, offers assistance in educating beneficiaries on identifying and preventing Medicare and Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse.

Become a CounselorSHIP and SMP are continuously seeking individuals who want to help their communities with understanding the complex subject of Medicare. Volunteers are crucial to all programs, specifically SHIP and SMP because of the one-on-one interaction and educational efforts the program strives to provide. Anyone who passes a background check and does not work for an insurance company or sell insurance can apply.
