Mission Statement

Read. Graduate. Succeed. provides schools with AmeriCorps members who recruit, train, schedule and monitor volunteers to individually tutor students who have been identified as needing extra help in reading by their classroom teachers and principals.

Description

In conjunction with the Governor's Statewide Literacy Initiative to have 90% of elementary students proficient in reading by the year 2020, non-profits, school districts, businesses, churches, and many other organizations are rallying together to ensure children are reading at grade level. In schools across the state, AmeriCorps coordinators are overseeing the tutoring of thousands of children in the Read Today Tutor Program. For 30 min twice a week a volunteer comes into the school and tutors a child beginning to fall behind in their reading. Using the Star Reading Program the children are mentored by tutors who work one-on-one to help bring them up to their grade reading level and beyond. Last year 85% of the program participants finished the school year at their grade reading level. Working with the AmeriCorps coordinator, volunteers can choose the school and the tutoring times that best fit their schedule. The minimal requirement to participate is 30 minutes, once a week, for 15 weeks. You must be 18 years of age, pass a background check, and attend a 60 minute training to begin tutoring. Join us and help change lives in your local community!
