Mission Statement

The mission of Dress for Success Columbus is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life

Description

Suiting Program: Women are referred by member agencies that provide job readiness, job training and/or job placement services. A first appointment is arranged for the woman to meet one-on-one with a Dress for Success personal shopper. Women are provided with an interview appropriate outfit which includes a suit, blouse, nylons, shoes, handbag, accent jewelry and personal care products. This process helps build self-confidence, self-assurance and a sense of value. After the woman is hired, a second appointment is scheduled for her to receive a weeks worth of workplace appropriate clothing, additional shoes, handbags, accent jewelry and more personal care products.

Professional Women's Group (PWG): PWG provides job retention programming assisting continued personal and professional development for the newly employed, low-income woman. The focus of the program is to provide the education, confidence and tools to establish and achieve goals. Professional Women's Group empowers women to remain in the workforce and sustain their self-sufficiency. Professional Women's Group provides: a networking association, a mentoring support system, financial literacy, management skills, professional and personal development, image development, and awareness of education opportunities and job leads. When a women is hired and comes to Dress for Success Columbus for her second dressing appointment, she is automatically eligible for PWG and will receive a calendar of meetings.

Career Center: Provides consultations with human resource professionals for resume writing, mock interviews, and general interview preparatory skills. Also available are: Microsoft Office computer tutorials including the Mavis Beacon typing tutor, Internet access, and a library of books. A great time to use the career center is during a dressing appointment, however it is available during all hours of boutique operation.

Going Places Network by Walmart: A 12-week Personal Development workshop that meets for 2 hours weekly.

The orientation was very helpful and informative but I decided not to volunteer at this agency since there was only on street parking several blocks away and the afternoon hours would have put me in the midst of rush hour. It took me an hour to get home.
