Mission Statement

The Journey Museum is the region's education venue that serves as a forum to preserve and explore the heritage of the cultures of the Black Hills Region and the knowledge of its natural environment so residents and visitors can understand the values of our past, enrich our present, and meet the challenges of the future.

Description

The Museum is a non-profit museum built by the city of Rapid City. It officially opened on May 18, 1997.

The Journey Museum houses three permanent collections and exhibits artifacts of two others. Museum collections are represented by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology; the Black Hills, Institute of Geological Research, Inc.; the South Dakota State Historical Society Archaeology Research Center; the United States Department of Interior, Indian Arts and Crafts Board; Minnilusa Pioneer Historical Association, and the City of Rapid City Duhamel Collection of historic Sioux Indian Art. The outdoor natural landscaping of Western Dakota Native Gardens makes up the sixth component of The Journey Museum and completes the NOrthern Plains experience here in the Black Hills.
