StandUp~SpeakOut of North Carolina (SUSONC) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that provides advocacy and therapeutic support through Art Therapy for children and teens who are victims or witnesses of domestic violence and sexual abuse. We believe that children who are victims and witnesses of abuse in their homes have a higher risk of failing academically, socially, and psychologically. Research shows male children who consistently see violence in the home are more likely to become batterers in their adult lives, and females are more likely to get involved with men who are batterers, or become abuser as well. The effects of domestic violence and sexual abuse amongst children and teens can be very detrimental to their lives, and our future society. According to Center for Disease and Control Prevention, 23% of females and 14% of males who ever experienced rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, first experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age. StandUp~SpeakOut believes through art therapeutic programming, advocacy, education, leadership, and prevention we begin the process of breaking violent barriers and creating a world of people free from the psychological cycle of abuse.
