CITIZENSHIP TUTOR: Must be 18+ to apply **Please directly email Heather Morgan to inquire about this position at heathermorgan@auroramhr.org. Email address is updated in this section of the posting. We do not regularly check VolunteerMatch for inquiries, so email connection with Heather Morgan is the best next step.** This opportunity is only suited to individuals with capacity to assist long term. It is not suitable for groups to do on a one-time basis. WHAT WE DO: APDC offers ESL, GED prep, and Citizenship classes to adult students from around the world. Students who have met residency requirements to apply for citizenship are highly advised to study to prepare for this intense and important interview that affords them the opportunities intrinsic to citizenship. The interview is conducted one-on-one in an office setting and is mostly conversational. Because of this, students benefit enormously from lots of practice with a tutor one-on-one to become accustomed to this format and the questions asked in this unique setting. WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU: Citizenship tutors would be asked to offer a minimum of one hour weekly to Zoom or in person sessions with one student. Tutors would attend a training before they were in contact with a student due to the complex nature of this application. Once trained, tutors will put their availability on a volunteer schedule and make appointments with students referred to our tutoring program. During your tutoring session, you would help the student work on the aspects of the application they most want help on, acting as the "agent." In person or on Zoom would be determined based on your interest and capacity for either venue matched with student needs. Citizenship tutors MUST be sympathetic to supporting refugee and immigrant students in this vulnerable move toward a challenging goal. Emotional intelligence, a clear, encouraging manner of engaging with students, and ideally, some understanding of trauma informed care, is essential to this position. CONTACT: Heather Morgan, heathermorgan@apdc.org. Do not apply on this website: please email Heather Morgan directly.

Must be 18+ to apply WHAT an APDC VOLUNTEER DOES: The Asian Pacific Development Center (APDC) Adult Education Program offers enrolled students private, one-hour tutoring sessions with an APDC volunteer (you!). Our students need the opportunity outside of class to get one-on-one help from a tutor with the material they study in class. WHAT APDC NEEDS FROM YOU: APDC Adult Education is recruiting volunteer math tutors. While APDC serves the immigrant and refugee community in Aurora and surrounding areas, some of our students are community members who grew up in the U.S. Students in our Adult Basic Education (ABE)/Adult Secondary Education (ASE) classes study to pass the GED, which is a high school equivalency exam. The math part of ABE/ASE class focuses on the following topics: arithmetic operations, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, prealgebra, and basic algebra and geometry. If you would enjoy volunteering with our adult students to help them understand these topics, please let us know. Our main need is for volunteers to work one-on-one with students in math, but we sometimes need classroom assistants as well. COMMITMENT: All volunteers will be required to do some online training and observe other tutors. We ask that virtual volunteers commit to the duration (or remainder of) one of our 13 week trimesters. Tutors choose regular time slots and maintain that schedule for the duration of the trimester (13 weeks). Days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends are all in demand. These appointments are held over Zoom. CONTACT: HeatherMorgan@apdc.org. Application, interview, and background check are required.
