Mission Statement

I.S. 318 has a commitment to make all students meet their goals by allowing them to become productive members of society through education. Guided by the students' wants and needs I.S. 318 will nurture, support, guide, and enhance students' learning to enable them to see and understand the connection between what they learned in I.S. 318 and the skills needed in the real world. This is accomplished through the use of technology in all content areas. A collaborative effort of all members of the school community will create a climate conducive to learning. This will create a positive learning environment and enable the students' visions of the future to become reality.

Description

AVID is a fifth- through eighth-grade system to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID elective class, where they facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum. As students from colleges and universities, tutors receive formal training and also serve as role models. AVID students who continue their education in college often return to the program as tutors.
