Mission Statement

Communities In Schools champions the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life.

Description

CIS is the the nation's largest stay in school network. CIS of Rocky Mount is a college access program. The purpose of the program is to help students successfully complete high school and be ready to enroll in a four-year college, community college or trade school.

Students enter the program in the 7th grade following a selection process involving teachers, school administrators and parents. A classroom is provided with a CIS teacher in grades 7 and 8. Mentors from the business community meet weekly with the middle school students. High School students have a site coordinator who serves as an additional counselor. Students are encouraged to take challenging courses and meet entry requirements for the University of North Carolina schools. Each student is required to complete two hours of community service per year.

Upon graduation from high school, students are eligible to receive a one time "last dollar" scholarship.

CIS offer youth and their families:

  • A personal one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
  • A safe place to learn and grow
  • A healthy start and healthy future
  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation
  • A chance to give back to the community
