Mission Statement

The mission of Special Olympics Alaska, Inc. is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, to demonstrate courage, to experience joy and to participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.

Description

Sports training is offered in 16 sports throughout the year in 4 different seasons. Persons with intellectual disabilities age 8 to 108 may participate. There is no cost to the athlete. All costs are met through local fund-raising. All coaching and administrative work is done on a volunteer basis - there is no paid staff at the local level. Special Olympics Alaska, Anchorage Community currently reaches over 300 athletes.
