Mission Statement

The Turning Point Center is an independent, tax-exempt non-profit organization which offers food, shelter and other rehabilitative services to meet the physical and emotional needs of a neglected segment of society - underprivileged individuals aged 50 and older who are unable to provide safe and adequate living conditions for themselves.

Through a variety of programs geared to address the unique needs of these individuals, our ultimate goal is to return them to an independent living status. In addition, we provide other homeless individuals and families with short term emergency services and referrals to other agencies.

Description

After feeding sandwiches to the homeless on the streets of Houston, Ms. Isha Salas recognized a need for a shelter to assist the elderly homeless. In 1988 she sold her home and business and bought a dilapidated apartment complex and transformed it into a safe haven for the homeless elderly. For the past 17 years we have provided services to over 2,000 individuals

Our goal is to return elderly homeless individuals back into mainstream society as self-sufficient individuals. We offer the basic essentials such as food, clothing and shelter. We also offer support services such as counseling, hands-on job training and job counseling, assistance in acquiring benefits such as SSI/Disability, food stamp, transportation, and other rehabilitative services. All of these services are provided within an alcohol/drug free structured living environment.
