Mission Statement

The mission of Fort Des Moines and Educational Center through exhibits, educational programming and public use of the facility is to preserve, promote, and perpetuate the heritage of service, sacrifice and risk taken by the Black men of World War I and the women of World War II.

Description

The 4.6 acre facility includes a 20,000 square foot military and historical museum located in Clayton hall, built in 1901 and restored in 2004. The grounds feature a chapel and a reflecting pool with a memorial sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist Richard Hunt. Two granite walls are inscribed with the names and home towns of the 639 graduate captains and lieutenants from 1917 and the first 436 WAAC officers from 1942. Clayton Hall and the chapel are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
