Mission Statement

The Nature Institute is dedicated to raising awareness of our natural world through preservation, restoration and education. The Nature Institute owns and manages land for biodiversity and operates year-round nature education programs for children and adults.

Description

The Nature Institute was created in 1980, by a group of foresighted individuals that developed a plan of preservation, restoration and education for lands on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Over 500 acres that include hardwood forest, hill prairies, wetlands and streams, have be managed for preservation of their natural ecosystems and restored from degraded landscapes to their original grandeur. The Nature Institute's successes include: creating a 27-acre prairie, saving the 293-acre Olin Nature Preserve from development, successfully operating the environmental education Discovery Day Camp at Talahi Lodge for 18 years, culitivated a strong cadre of dedicated volunteers and continued public outreach on the importance of protecting the areas natural wonders and importance of being good stewards to the land.
